Lenovo Contributions to 3GPP CT3#139: Enhancing XR Traffic Performance Over 5GA Networks

At the 3GPP CT3#139 meeting (Feb. 17–21, 2025), Lenovo submitted two key contributions focused on enhancing XR traffic performance over 5G-Advanced networks—closely aligned with the 6G-BRICKS use case “Metaverse as an Enabler of a Modern Workplace.”

The core idea introduces a shift from flow-based to PDU set-based QoS handling. Using the “Proxying UDP in HTTP” mechanism (RFC 9298), the UPF establishes an HTTP/UDP tunnel with the media server. This tunnel carries Media Related Information (MRI) embedded in media traffic, allowing the UPF and gNB to recognize and prioritize complete sets of packets representing video frames—critical for XR quality, where missing a single packet can make a frame undecodable.

Contributions:

  • C3-250056.zip: Defines how the UPF establishes HTTP/UDP tunnels and receives MRI via HTTP Datagrams for smarter resource allocation.

  • C3-250669.zip: Introduces MRI delivery via encrypted UDP options, enabling efficient, media-aware handling by the UPF.

These contributions support 6G-BRICKS goals by improving XR streaming reliability and quality in immersive workplace applications.
