Standards Contributions for Holographic and XR Use Cases

We are  pleased to announce significant contributions made by Lenovo to the 3GPP SA4#130 meeting  (Orlando, Nov. 18–22, 2024). These contributions play a crucial role in supporting the project’s holographic and XR use cases, advancing the goals of 6G innovation.

Key Contributions:

  1. S4-242035 & S4-242036 – Correction of RTCP Viewport Feedback Format Value
These contributions resolve an inconsistency in the 3GPP TS 26.114 specification by updating the RTCP Viewport feedback format value to align with IANA’s assignment. By ensuring proper registration and removing placeholders, this change enhances the accuracy and interoperability of 360-degree video feedback mechanisms. The correction aligns with 6G-BRICKS’s goal to support the delivery of immersive media, a key component of applications like holographic communication and XR. It also ensures modularity and open standards, which facilitate the development of interoperable and reusable components for advanced media delivery.

  2. S4-242045 – Views on AL-FEC Codec Support in Rel-19
This contribution examines the integration of Application Layer Forward Error Correction (AL-FEC) into 5G RTP workflows for enhancing low-latency media delivery in applications such as mobile gaming and XR. It emphasizes techniques like content ratio-aware discarding to optimize network performance during congestion. AL-FEC’s ability to ensure robust and adaptive media delivery aligns with 6G-BRICKS’s objectives of showcasing “better than 5G” KPIs and supporting advanced use cases like metaverse applications. Moreover, the resource-efficient approach proposed in this contribution complements the XAI-driven management and optimization strategies central to 6G-BRICKS.

  3. S4-242044 – Views on PDU Set Size Accuracy
This contribution focuses on resolving inaccuracies in PDU Set Size information, which is crucial for efficient media transmission in 5G networks. The proposed solutions, such as feedback-based corrections and overprovisioning, aim to optimize RTP workflows and improve network-layer data handling. This contribution supports 6G-BRICKS by contributing to the foundational capabilities needed for seamless media delivery in emerging applications like XR and holographic communication. Accurate PDU size management ensures resource efficiency and reliability, which are critical for meeting the high-performance demands of advanced 6G media use cases validated within 6G-BRICKS.

These contributions underline our commitment to advancing standards-based innovations for next-generation networks and applications.
